So, idk if anyone else has heard yet (you may have noticed if you've logged into Steam recently), but Steam is now allowing mod-creators to charge for their mods in the Steam Workshop.

Some previously free mods are now paid-for and some modders are even placing ads in the free versions of their mods.

    Any thoughts?

I think it's time for me to start collecting as many mods as possible. Disaster prevention and all that. Wouldn't it be a kicker if you can only find mods from one place? Honestly the internet feels like it's shrinking sometimes.

Your right on top of this story @BaconMan8910
I was just going to comment on that (and make a thread on this whole issue but glad I'm not the only one)

Mark my words. They'll be back

I was reading user comments and that's always a trip. Bring the popcorn.

This part sticks out in my mind
That was a beta test! We're working on Version 2.0.

An update to this thread: I already mentioned that Valve backed down on the whole paid mods thing, although it's likely they will try again later but take a slightly different (hopefully more consumer friendly) approach. Now, Black Mesa, a Half Life mod, is being sold on Steam for $20. There's a bit of controversy over it being, essentially, a paid mod. Others justify it, however, by pointing out that the mod is a complete overhaul, adds new models, voices, graphics, and even multiplayer. Ergo, it is more of an expansion or "re-make" of Half Life, rather than a mod. Which may be a fair point. Especially with the yearly releases of re-makes, HD re-releases, and "complete" editions put out by publishers for games that have already been released, with no real change to the actual game itself.

The main problem with the whole charge for mods thing is people can just down load the mod for free somewhere else and charge for it on steam, stealing the mod.
@Crazy Potato you are a good man for staying free.

I have no problem for the concept, giving creators a choice to make some money for the hard work they do, especially for some of the total conversion mods i have seen out there. the cut taken by steam is the default that have which is fine, but the 40 or 50% that the publisher took seems a little much.

I feel like a "pay what you want" or donation model could work well. :3
