In the last few years, we’ve had some sci-fi-inflected action treats in the likes of The Guest and Upgrade – films that feel like spiritual successors to the likes of RoboCop and The Terminator. Now it looks like we might be able to add Bloodshot to that list. Vin Diesel is starring in an adaptation of the Valiant comic as the super-soldier with nanobot-assisted regeneration powers, who uses his near-unstoppable nature to track down the man who killed his wife. The film’s first trailer has just arrived and you can watch it below – though be warned, it does seem to give rather a lot away. If you’re on the spoiler-phobic side, maybe pause this one at the 1 minute 20 second mark.

As the trailer suggests, there’s more going on in the story than first meets the eye – but beyond the twisty plot, this one looks to promise R-rated action, some fairly gruesome regeneration sequences, and an impressive supporting cast. Alongside Diesel you’ll find the likes of Baby Driver’s Eiza González, Outlander star Sam Heughan, Guy Pearce, and Toby Kebbell. In the director’s seat is Dave Wilson, making his feature debut. He’s no stranger to comics and blockbusters though – he worked on the visual effects for Avengers: Age Of Ultron, and created video game cinematics for the likes of The Division and Star Wars: The Old Republic.
Bloodshot is the first of Valiant’s planned adaptations with Sony Pictures, set to be followed by a big-screen take on Harbinger. Diesel’s film is due to hit UK cinemas on 21 February 2020.
