The Tchoban Foundation Museum for Architectural Drawing in Berlin, Germany, will be holding a contemporary "Anime Architecture" exhibition featuring background art from the films Patlabor (1989), Ghost in the Shell (1995) and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (2004).

Curated by Stefan Riekeles and Nadejda Bartels, the exhibit focuses on, "virtuosic renderings of urban architecture," and includes works by Hiromasa Ogura (art director for Ghost in the Shell, background art for Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence), Mamoru Oshii (director for Patlabor, Ghost in the Shell), Atsushi Takeuchi(layout for Ghost in the Shell, key animation for Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence and Patlabor) and Takashi Watabe (layout for Ghost in the Shell and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence).

The works displayed in the exhibit will demonstrate the four different stages of creating a hand-drawn background image. The first of these, setting, is a brief sketch of the architecture and landscape. This is followed by the image board, where the art director decides on the color palette for the scene. Next is the layout, which references movement and camera position while giving specific locations for any objects or people. Finally, the background is colored and finished according to the layout's specifications.

Below is one example of a completed background. This particular image was created for the 1995 Ghost in the Shell film by .
