Haha, when I saw this thread I was thinking "don't tell me you didn't know before now". Everyone has been talking about this adaptation since it was announced, then everyone was cursing hollywood for casting scarlet johanson.
But after reading this thread, it makes a bit more sense. So you want to watch this franchise huh?

Basically ignore the Tachikoma entries, they are included at the end of the episodes themselves as a bonus thing that no one really asked for. Ignore Arise entries since they are the newest instalments [I haven't seen them yet either] and aren't where the franchise began obviously. Disregard some of those movies since most are recap movies, they'll ruin the whole series but focus on the main arc that the season is about.

Now that that is out of the way you have two choices, well three but one of them is a rerelease of the original.
The choices are the original Ghost in the Shell Film from 1995, or the remake of it but I'd stick with the original
    https://myanimelist.net/anime/43/Ghost_in_the_Shell
Or the series Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex which is an alternative version of this franchise.

These are probably the best two places to begin this massively popular franchise. Or so I say but I gave up on it after the 2nd Gig [second season]. Hopefully you find this helpful, this is how I begun it of course I'm not sure if this is how everyone suggests watching it.

Thanks Supernatural Knight for always having the information I don't whenever it comes to anime.

No worries @AngeloDaniele I try at least. I believe I am too into anime so I might as well use my plight to benefit others as much as possible.
I'm not sure if that is the only order people will watch them in. For instance, I know a lot of people say they won't watch anything "too old". In some cases I've seen anything listed before 06 as too old [how ridiculous right?]. I believe those kinds of closed-minded idiots will likely watch it from Arise or 2015. I'm not saying that is wrong but it just isn't where it started. Again since I've not seen it yet I have no idea what it is like.

You're right, saying anything made before 2006 is too old is ridiculous I mean most of the studio ghibli classics are made before then, for hayao miyazaki's sake they should be reformed.
And for the record I have chosen to watch the 1995 film first and by chosen to I mean I watched it last night it was goood, so now do I watch Ghost in the Shell 2.0 or Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence?

Wow aren't you on top of things. It'd take a lot longer for me to get around to watching something than that, especially if I was only just starting a franchise like this.
Now as for your question.... I actually went straight to Stand Alone Complex because I had already seen half of it. So it isn't like I'm even following my advice here, but from what MAL says 2.0 is just the movie you already watched redone with different graphics and soundtrack. Meanwhile Innocence is actually a sequel to what you watched. Surely watching something new would be much more entertaining than just rewatching the same thing the next day but slightly different.
If I was invested in finishing this franchise myself, I'd leave anything that is merely a recap/retelling until the very end if not months/years later that way they could be enjoyed more than just "I've already seen this yesterday, this is just to finish this franchise"

I am stepping out of my 'lurking in the shadows'!

I would watch Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence after the 1995 movie. Then I would move on to Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. After this go on to GITS: SAC 2nd Gig followed by GITS: Solid State Society. If you still want more, I would move onto the GITS: Arise Franchise.

Wait really BK? Does this mean your back a bit more? Please say it is true. It has been a long time, I've missed seeing your posts.
But good to see that I had the order correct, I just don't follow my own advice because why would I? I watch what I want when I want. I also watch what I don't want too........
    I just watch shit okay.

Still a better love story than twilight.... is that getting too old now for a joke? I love that we remember this somewhat fondly despite everything, can you believe that we watched it just over 3 years ago now?
I've seen more than that. Doggy poo was worse than Shitcom. But the best shit titled anime still goes very easily to Cat Shit One and I'm sure you agree.

Ah yeah, time to celebrate. For this event I think I'll have to link you to a whole bunch of shorts or something.

Movie looks like utter crap. Scarlett Johansson will never compete with the hotness that is Motoko Kusanagi <3 This, along with Netflix's desperate attempt on remaking Death Note, belong in the trash can.

The movie was a flop, wasn't really good and half of the theater was walking out.
