Mugen's a buck wild warrior - violent, thoughtless and womanizing. Jin is a vagrant ronin - mysterious, traditional, well-mannered and very strong as well. These two fiercely independent warriors can`t be any more different from one another, yet their paths cross when Fuu, a ditzy waitress, saves them from being executed when they are arrested after a violent swordfight. Fuu convinces the two vagrant young men to help her find a mysterious samurai "who smells of sunflowers." And their journey begins. This is a story about love, friendship and courage... NOT!

Only 9 episodes in, but I like it okay. Nothing too special. I really just don't like Mugen. I don't really like apathetic characters like him. I'm not sure the episodic nature of the show is beneficial. I understand that the plot is moving, but I haven't felt too much progression. Here's hoping I enjoy it more later.

I only watched a few eps of this series years ago when it was airing on adult swim, didn't really care for it tbh.

The ending sucked. It's obvious that this first season was a setup to a second season that we never got. Too many characters came and left as if they were gearing up for a re-vamp for a second season that would take place in the future

But honestly, it's not that bad of a show. I enjoyed it, even if it was only Mugen and Jin I really enjoyed. But I learned something about history during this whole anime: all Edo period noblemen were fat and ugly.

Mugen was my favorite character. Unlike *cough* eclipse *cough*, I tend to enjoy apathetic characters; albeit I enjoy apathetic characters who know what they're doing even more.

As far as quality goes, this series is well served as a transition series. A series that serves well as a time-waster while you figure out what to watch next. It lacks real character substance as characters come and go without really giving them a chance to become likable. Episodic plots don't bother me as long as each episode has substance, which is every other episode at best. If you like action, this series can give you a healthy dosage of procrastination. But for those of us who prefer more logical battles, this anime will leave you questioning whether or not you're in the right section of JustDubs.

But one of the biggest praises I can give this anime is that the action flows really well. They don't try to mix up their action with plot development, which is a huge plus. Many a series use sequences where the action can be amazing, but choose to waste it on characters talking to one another to advance the plot, fighting for like 5 seconds, then going back to talking again. I can say I was happy that swords were flying, instead of words, during those action sequences.

I'll bet I could think of something else to say, but I'm too lazy.

Haha! You don't have to cough me out! I may joke around about "objective taste," but I never said he was bad. Characters like him just aren't for me.

I just did that for comedic effect. I never intended to actually speak of your character taste in a derogatory manner xD. I'll sneeze you out next time :)

But there were parts that revolved around cross dressing, I thought you were a sucker for that theme and would watch anything regardless of how little it actually is in quantity?

My thoughts, I found this series to be pretty damn enjoyable. Violence, bad arse main characters, likeable female lead that isn't completely useless *cough*Sakura I'm looking at you*cough*. The sword fights amused me and talk about a friendship "Remember, I'm the one that is going to kill you" true bros right there, Mugen and Jin should have been in our Brovember elim. One of those final lines also indicates that they should have been included "You know, for some reason I don't feel like killing you anymore".

Lets talk about the voice acting, I find this is one area that the series excelled in. I watched the dub but I did check out parts of the sub as well just for comparisons sake. Having Steven Blum voice a character like Mugen is amazing, these are the kinds of roles he was born to play. His voice just suited him too perfectly, but this was kind of expected since he did a great job as Bebop's Spike as well as GTO's Onizuka. Who agrees with me on this?
Now his sub voice on the other hand being Kazuya Nakai, most commonly known for One Piece's Zoro, also done a pretty damn good job. There is a reason he always seems to appear for swordsmen and that is because he always does them justice.
Jin was voiced pretty well also. I initially thought he may had been to softly spoken even when annoyed but the english dub portrayed the same atmosphere as the sub's voice actor did. The interesting thing to note here is that his sub VA only has 3 roles associated with his name so his uniqueness really brought the character to high level to begin with. After a few eps Kirk Thornton grew on me.
Fuu is a hard character to judge, Kari Wahlgren who I've not heard many roles from did a good job but the sub had her sounding a bit cuter in my opinion. The cuter voice seems to go better with the idea that she could sweet talk people into doing things but the dub's voice had her sounding a bit tougher which I honestly thought suited how tough the time period was. They were both good and had their own respective reasons to like each performance.

The foreigner voice acting I have to say I was quite impressed here. I had Bato confirm if they were actually speaking Dutch in episode 6. They were, and not like the so often heard 'engrish' that we get for english speakers. This was his response "It actually is dutch and it's pretty good. The one person talked better than the other, but it's pretty good. Abit formal though, but thats understandable cuz they are important people."
And let's not forget the Americans in episode 23, some did have engrish accents in the sub but the important general/captain whatever he was did speak in a better accent [I'm not sure if he was played by a native english speaker, I failed to check in the credits].

And now for my favourite episode, episode 23 for the sheer stupidity of that baseball game was amazing. I laughed way too hard at that match, to think an episode that didn't involve a sword fight would be my favourite from this series.

In case you couldn't tell I greatly enjoyed this series, my ratings for it fluctuated between 6-9 for individual episodes so I ended up rating the series a 7 because as a whole it was a good fun show. Prostitution, theft, murder, kidnapping and yet somehow it was still an enjoyable fun series. Nothing but likeable and bizarre characters in the cast really helped this to be an entertaining watch.

It's actually gender benders and trap chars that I am a sucker for (albeit unless the anime flat out tell you in ep 1 of the whole anime then, I don't wish to know there's one in said anime otherwise it diminishes the anime for me and spoils it for me as a result), after them then it's cross dressing. *cough*Ash in Pokémon*cough* But even then if I don't like something, I'm not going to continue to watch or play it just for something that's in it that I don't like if the over all show/game/whatever is just boring me or not to my tastes/liking. Also, with the exception of the MC girl, I honestly don't care for the other chars in this anime and even if any of them cross dressed, it'd be pointless to me given that.

See now the first two I knew, but like I thought Crossdressing is pretty high on your list as well. Too bad then I guess since it was a good show, but the cross dressing wasn't very much so you didn't miss anything really. I think it was one scene for about 3 minutes or something so I was more curious in your level of importance regarding these kinds of scenes.

I agree with this, Mugen was great and let's face it that is because he was voiced by Steven Blum. I'd still be watching newer dubs if this guy still got great roles like this.

I'd also like to question this part Lince, I thought almost every ep had substance. There were some where I didn't care for it much [such as the mushroom trip zombie episode] but most of the episodes had some important substance. Yes it was episodic but finding someone where you can't just look up an address or a phone number takes a hell of a lot of time. Each episode was a stage in their journey as they got closer to their only lead so I'd call that substance especially when they fight their obstacles blocking the way.

Well, when I listed cross dressing as last, I meant it's not that important to me, I admit there is a tad bit of important but not by much and it has to be done juuust right for me to care about it. (Example, there was 1 scene on/before ep 13 of Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo where 1 of the chars cross dressed and I loved it, twas too short a scene though and I forget the other example that would have better explained this) So, yeah, cross dressing isn't high on my list at all but I absolutely love and adore it if I come across it and it's done right and yeah, 3 or less mins, not worth it for the series this thread is about. lol
