Is it just me or have dubs gotten worse?

    This isn't intended to be a dub vs sub thread. Just throwing that out there at the start.

    It's just a thought I've been having, and no it's not one of those "it's all new voice actors so it sucks" things. I remember really liking the Haruhi Suzumiya dub, but thinking that that one spin off about Nagato had a pretty bad dub even though it had all the original voice cast. I've also noticed a lack of quality in some of the productions (like how everyone's voice sounded really hollow in that Nagato spin off I mentioned). Is it just me or am I going crazy?

    Also sorry if this makes no sense. I'm sick and a having hard time forming words.

    Not sure what you mean bud? A lot of the dubs I have been watching as of late...

    * Brave Witches
    * The Silver Guardian
    * Attack on Titans S2
    * Sakura Quest
    * The Royal Tutor
    * Naruto Shippuden
    * Tsugumomo
    * Clockwork Planet
    * Restaurant to Another world
    * Seven Mortal Sins

    Just to name a few...

    All have been on the ball, would've noticed anything that didn't sound right comparing with the above mentioned...

    To note though I have not watched Haruhi Suzumiya... so cannot really compare what you have watched and what I have watched... Out of curiosity what are you watching your anime series on (not that it may matter)?

    I can't attest to your dilemma @Heizengard. My only thoughts are that the spin off came much later than Haruhi Suzumiya and the production cost of spin offs is typically much less than that of an animated series. It's very rare you ever see that not being the case. So due to a lower production budget, or so I'm assuming toppled with the Voice Actors being out of tune for those roles could explain why you feel this way. I mean if you don't practice something frequently you get rusty.

    I'm inclined to say yes they have gotten worse @Heizengard, but I also must say that I haven't watched a dub in years. If I watch the sub first I can't stand the dub period, so I don't look at them.
    But some of the trailers I've watched holy shit. Rather than just translating them they throw in "relevant" crap for the average watcher. I feel like it is similar to what 4kids did, but instead of making them kid friendly it is to make it westerner friendly. I loved Love Live, but just watching the dub trailer for that I feel is a horrible mistake. Although even with older shows dubs I couldn't get behind. K-on is meant to be good, but to me just jumping through the first episode for the Godzilla and Detroit Metal City references was horrible.

    For this reason I am noticing some stupid "official subs" popping up now too. Almost no fansub groups exist nowadays so we rely heavily on the streamer's subs and I'm noticing jargon that never use to appear.

    Actually, I suggest you go back and watch old dubs you liked, you may notice they weren't as good as you remembered them.

    I am currently watching FMA:B and the dubs are garbage although I used to think they were awesome.

    Someone told me to watch Witch Hunter Robin dubbed, despite only watching subs, because it was one of the good ones.

    I tried rewatching the Suzumiya movie dubbed, but that also was pretty bad.

    By all means, not all voice actors are bad, but usually background characters are so dull, it kills it for me.

    I think for me, it depends on which voice actors star in the anime. There are some voice actors who are not very good. While, others excel. For example, Crispin Freeman is amazing. Whilst someone like Greg Ayres should never have started. For me, English voice acting is very hit and miss. Oddly, when it comes to feature films, generally the voice acting is very good. But, again it depends who is in it really and how much of a performance they put on for their respective role. But yeah, mostly I have been watching subbed anime now as it engages me more.

    Lad, I've seen both, they're both terrible.

    Also to answer your question, dubs have always been bad, the only time they've been good is when it's like Ghost Stories. Alternatively, the Danganronpa 3 dub is a complete masterpiece.

    If you're not watching anime in subs you may as well not watch it at all.

    I don't think it's so much as making it "westerner friendly" as it is to more along the lines, "relay" (for lack of a better word description) the feeling portrayed by the Japanese dub materials. For these reasons, some dubbing companies have inserted more "western" related references that closely relate to what the Japanese dub had, and sometimes it's hard to do one if there isn't one that they can relay for English dub viewers to accurately relate to. If there is a joke that only Japan would understand but viewers in the US or UK watching the English dub don't, then the English dub has failed to convey the joke by sticking to a Japan-only joke instead of going with a joke that English viewers would understand. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad. But if they manage to get people to at least smile at the joke, then the replacement worked as intended.
    Let's not go there, Maddy. This isn't a sub vs dub thread and starting such a view for a topic that isn't about that is against the TOS and our community guidelines, specifically: Trolling, which even the community guidelines specifically used "Dubs vs Subs" as one of the examples.

    This is a dub (then) vs dub (now) thread, please stick to the topic. If you don't watch dubs at all, but watch subs. Then use your experience for "Subs (then) vs Subs (now)" to relate to the topic.

    I-It's just a prank bro.

    Also if a sub thread ever came up it'd just be me trashing dubs.

    Also fine, wanna know the problems with dubs today. Funimation putting Jamie Marchi as the head writer and because she follows Anita she feels the need to make dated references. I MEAN FUCKING MAID DRAGON HAD AN OPPRESSION LINE AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON PRISON SCHOOL

    I find it ironic that she's for women, but keeps voicing sluts.
