So for a while now, I've been facing what I consider to be an anime dilemma in which I wish to find a really good anime, but it will ruin all the fun if I asked for it

If you know me, you'll know that I'm a big fan of series like Higurashi, Madoka, Steins;Gate, Gakkou Gurashi and Clannad, each of which has a bit of a twist somewhere down the line. And by twist, I mean you're driving merrily down the highway when all of a sudden the guy driving the car makes a sharp U-turn without even giving you a bit of warning

    However, herein lies my problem.

If I ask someone to recommend me a series like this, it will spoil all the fun because I will be expecting a plot twist that hits me like a bus

However, if I DON'T ask, it will result it me having to trudge through crappy series after crappy series before I can find the diamond in the rough.

It seems that my only hope is for someone to recommend me a series and say absolutely nothing about it in the hopes that they know what I like.

Meh, I take to not grabbing recommendations, and just trudging through the crap -- I don't drop anime or manga, I just put it off.

Hmhm @Timekeeper I see your problem, and that certainly does make things harder now that you mention it. I'll keep an eye out for you, maybe hide the recommendation amongst some crap so you aren't sure which it is.
I do have an idea for one that you may like but it hasn't been released yet and I know how you feel about watching stuff weekly.

We'll see what I can come back with, nothing else is coming to mind.

One thing that might work is if we recommend an anime but give a poor description of it therefore hiding what it is really about.

Hmm... I've never really had this problem, 1 cause I watch more of it without recommendations, 2 luck when trudging through the crap, and 3 even if it was recommended, I still not sure what to expect, cause come on its anime, and if there's one thing I've learned is do not expect to know the story.

Anyway how about this, I will recommend a few anime, based on my preferences, but considering yours (at least we can narrow down the crap).
    Unbreakable Machine Doll
    Fate stay Night
    Black Bullet
I hear Another is pretty good for what you might be looking for, but I haven't seen it.

    Hope this helps:)

The makers of Steins;Gate also have another anime that just finished airing in Japan. It's called Occult Nine. It's definitely not on the same level as Steins;Gate. I think part of the reasoning is that it only got one season so parts feel rushed. I'd still recommend it especially if you're a big Steins;Gate fan.

I know the perfect way to deal with this. I'll recommend 3 Anime, you won't know which may or may not have OH SHIT moments.
Then you can go through all of them and hopefully be surprised.

    Mushshi
    From a New World
    Shiki

i think i get what you mean and its pretty much noticeable when it comes to shounen anime. its just the same formula of MC getting stronger and fighting other characters that are stronger than him but still surpassed the limits either by flash backs or lucky events.

how about this, every time you ask for a recommendation, the person must give 2 additional random anime. that way, you will not know which is the one with the plot twist and which are the normal anime (given you wont MAL search the anime and read reviews of said anime).

just for the sake of example you havent watched angel beats, the person you asked for a recommendation couldve added nana and tari tari. what they all have in common is that they have music and some side drama in the genre but you dont know which is the roller coaster, the drama, the sad drama, or the walk by the park.

    @Timekeeper
Hello, compared to you I'm a newb so I won't try and recommend something you've probably already watched like little busters.
Instead similar to what Mr supernatural knight said I believe you should ask people to send you a mixture of anime recommendations, perhaps three so that you don't have to watch too many boring anime, one will be the honest recommendation while the other two could be anime you simply haven't seen yet.

This is just the first thing that came to mind when I saw your post so do what you will regardless.

If by some small chance you haven't seen Little Busters, please watch it, It isn't fast paced but it is very enjoyable if you watch it all the way through Including the sequel.
    Hope it helped :)
