A Dutch company called Mars One has announced plans to create the first human settlement on the Red Planet in just 10 years.

Mars One plans to pick travelers to submit to a full-time training program that will conclude with a one-way ticket to Mars, where a prepared colony will be waiting.

Prospective colonists must be at least 18 years old, and the Mars One team says qualities such as resiliency, adaptability, creativity, resourcefulness and curiosity will be given high priority. All necessary skills for Mars survival will be taught to the colonists over the next decade as they prepare full-time to blast into space--and history.

Mars One founders Bas Landsorp and Arno Wielders, entrepreneurs with ties to technology and space industries, said they plan to send probes and rovers as early as 2016 to prepare the planet for human habitation.

And--no surprise here--they plan to fund the mission through the wonders of Reality television.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Space X founder Elon Musk is also eyeing plans to populate Mars, offering aspiring Martians berth for the low low price of half a million dollars.

Currently 100 candidates on the shortlist to establish a human colony on the planet Mars are to undergo tests as part of a new phase of the selection process, the project organizers said.

Around 200,000 hopefuls from 140 countries initially signed up for the Mars One project, which is to be partly funded by a television reality show about the endeavor. This has been whittled down to 100 people. After the five-day third phase of tests, it will be trimmed further to 40, of whom 24 will eventually be chosen for the one-way trips to the red planet, scheduled to start in 2026.

Mars One said the latest tests, 90 percent of which are those used by NASA, will done in teams. "Over the course of five days, candidates will face various challenges," the Dutch-based non-profit organisation said in a statement. "It will be the first time all candidates will meet in person and demonstrate their capabilities as a team. "In this round the candidates will play an active role in decision making/group formation.

"Mars One has asked the candidates to group themselves into teams with the people they believe they can work well with." As they will not be returning to Earth, those selected must be capable of living in small groups, finding water, producing oxygen and growing their own food. NASA is currently working on three Mars missions with the European Space Agency and plans to send another rover to Mars in 2020.

But NASA plans for a manned mission to Mars are not until the 2030s.

Nah. My internet connection is already shit enough without waiting up to thirty minutes for transmissions and signals to travel between the Earth and Mars.

I second that The lag on watching porn while there would kind of put me off (in more ways then one)..

It would mean that i'd have to plan my sessions ahead....
no thank you I am more of the spontaneous type... :)

Guess we'll just have to make our own porn...

Will there be a porn director along with the expedition? This is important... for science.

I'll be the director! I shall usher in a new age of clean porn, and revolt against Earth's dirty porn!

Going to Mars would be nice, to be away from Earth politics, but inconveniences will be abundant, I am sure.
Just imagine the price of a long distance phone call.

Some of my relatives call hourly, so that might be a problem.

Really, it sounds like a wonderful proposition, so long as I could get two years worth of anime, or a stable internet connection.

I hereby pledge my allegiance to you, Core.

Men are from Mars, why would I go there? Venus is where it's at, we should colonize there.

I see what you did there. You missed a chance to make a Uranus joke though, but I can't come up with one either. Did you here about Mercury though? Apparently there's been some activity over there.

Personally, I'd like to live on one of Jupiter's moons. Wasn't Europa thought to be a possible bet for alien life? Or maybe I'm thinking of a different one.

Mercury? What the heck could you find there? The lava monster from Starfox 64?

Europa is completely frozen but it's thought you could possibly find something beneath it's ice. There's a lot of variety with Jupiter's moons. I think Venus might be easier since it has an atmosphere. It may be an atmosphere of Carbon Dioxide but since that's similar to our own planet maybe something could be done about that. The other planets would have to be warmed up from scratch.

I'm no scientist though, my own thoughts on such things are probably out of date. Is Pluto still a planet?

I think some scientists still consider it a planet. They flip-flop more than people think Trump flip-flops. Last I heard, they still think it's some kind of moon. Who knows what they're trying to class Pluto as now. lol

Ah, Pluto -- least it has it's moon, as they participate in one of the most beautiful cosmic romances of all time.

It's funny, they had to create a new term just to classify Pluto.

As I am aware, it's being called a dwarf planet.

I'd go to Mars, but I wouldn't want to be part of the initial expedition. That just sounds like a death trap.

It's not a death trap... just a one way ride.

I'd go if there was wifi

You don't know the full story about the planned missions to Mars do you? @AngeloDaniele

One of the reasons Mars does not have a reliable atmosphere is because the Core of the planet is dead. It's solid. Mars does not have a molten core like Earth. Because it has a solid core, it does not have an Electromagnetic Field. Something that is essential for the preservation of life on a planet. Without a EMF a planet cannot form it's own Ozone Layer and protect itself from the Solar Winds, Gamma Rays, X Rays, and cannot thicken to form a Nitrogen Oxygen atmosphere.

One of the planned missions for the Mars Project is to tow a "Moonlike" asteroid into geosynchronous orbit around the planet. In doing so, this will cause the planet to undergo massive seismic activity in an attempt to "Jump start" the core of the planet. For anyone living on the surface of the planet during this time, it will be a living hell. We aren't just talking about quakes that can be measured by the Richter Scale. The kind of Tectonic shifts that will be occurring will make an 8.5 seem like a fluffy white bunny in comparison.

This is a necessary event that will need to unfold if sustainable life is to be assured upon the face of our celestial neighbor. Complete and total terraforming is going to need to happen in order for humans to live on that planet. So no, I don't want to be there when they decide they are going to create a new moon for Mars.

I like it. Thank you for the info Rayden. :)

I can't remember very much at all about Mars so there's not much I can say in terms of science but I can give a short open ended story that a space enthusiast might find cool.
An old classmate of mine actually went for work experience at NASA after winning an essay based competition on the mission to mars, he also wrote his own thesis on potential alternatives on making the planet uninhabitable. I tie in the story the classmate who helped him write his thesis by proof reading it.

and if you are a space fan and don't know about them there is a corporation called SpaceX that is doing some interesting work. So yeah check them out if your interested.

If there's internet, and anime there, sure why not. Earth has gone to hell.
